What is an IV iron infusion?

An IV iron infusion is the intravenous delivery of iron in a clinically supervised setting. The infusion is administered by a senior nurse, typically over around 30 to 60 minutes depending on dose and product.

IV iron is used where rapid replenishment is appropriate, where oral iron is not tolerated, or where ongoing depletion outpaces the gut's ability to absorb dietary or supplemental iron. The dose is calculated against your pre-treatment blood test results.

How IV iron therapy works

Iron supports the production of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. Where iron stores are depleted, the body's ability to produce haemoglobin is reduced and symptoms can include fatigue, breathlessness and reduced cognitive sharpness.

Oral iron typically takes weeks to months to restore depleted iron stores, and absorption is variable. IV iron bypasses the gut entirely and delivers iron directly into circulation, where it is then incorporated into iron stores over the following days and weeks. Many clients begin to notice a difference within around 1 to 4 weeks of treatment, although individual responses vary.

Who Iron IV Therapy is for:

Women experiencing iron loss or absorption issues.

Heavy periods, gut conditions affecting absorption, and dietary patterns can all contribute to iron loss. Where ferritin remains low despite oral supplementation, IV delivery offers an effective alternative.

Oral iron causes gastric side effects in a substantial proportion of those who take it. For these patients, IV iron offers a route that bypasses the gut entirely.

People who cannot tolerate oral iron.

Patients with chronic illness or post-surgical iron depletion.

Iron stores are commonly depleted in chronic illness and after surgery. Where clinically indicated, IV iron supports replenishment alongside conventional medical care.

Improved Energy | Reduced Fatigue | Oxygen Transport | Restored Iron Levels

Our Iron Infusion is a medical IV treatment designed to restore iron levels in individuals with confirmed deficiency, supporting energy production, oxygen transport, and overall physiological function. Delivered intravenously, it enables rapid and effective replenishment where oral supplementation is not tolerated or insufficient. Treatment only provided following clinical assessment and review of blood results.

Why Choose Body Brilliant

Physician-led clinical oversight - All IV iron protocols at Body Brilliant are reviewed by Dr Mark Jinks (MBChB MRCGP MSc), our Chief Medical Officer. Dr Jinks brings a general practice background with a Master of Science in sports medicine, and oversees our standard operating procedures for iron therapy.

CQC-registered - Body Brilliant is registered with the Care Quality Commission. We follow documented protocols for IV iron, including the pre-treatment screening, dose calculation, infusion delivery and post-infusion observation period appropriate to the product used.

Functional medicine perspective on root cause - Our founder, Gemma Wilkins, is a qualified nutritionist and functional medicine specialist with over 20 years of experience. The functional medicine angle shapes how we approach iron therapy. We do not just replenish iron; we look at why you became deficient in the first place, so we can address the underlying pattern alongside treatment.

Senior nurse delivery and ongoing support - Iron is one of the more clinically demanding IV therapies. We administer it through senior nurses with specific IV iron training and provide post-infusion support.

Where to Get IV Iron Infusions in London

IV iron infusions are delivered at our London clinics in Mayfair and the City. We are happy to discuss home visit availability for IV iron on a case-by-case basis during your consultation, as some clinical settings are more appropriate than others for iron specifically.

What to expect from your IV Iron Appointment

  • 1. Test

A blood test confirms current iron status. You can have this at one of our clinics or provide existing results taken within the last three months. We screen for ferritin, full blood count, transferrin saturation and inflammation markers.

  • 2. Consultation

You complete an IV pre-treatment form with our clinical team. We review your blood results, medical history, current medications and any prior iron treatment. From this we agree dose and product.

  • 3. Review

Where appropriate, our clinicians take a functional medicine perspective on the underlying cause of iron depletion, for example heavy menstrual bleeding, gut absorption issues, or dietary patterns. Investigating root cause is part of how we approach iron therapy, not an optional extra.

  • 4. Treat

A senior nurse administers your infusion in a comfortable, private treatment setting. The session typically takes around 30 to 60 minutes. We monitor throughout and remain on hand for the recommended observation period afterwards.

SIDE EFFECTS

Is an IV iron infusion safe?

IV iron infusions are well-tolerated by most patients when delivered following clinical assessment. The most common side effects are mild and short-lived: headache, a metallic taste during the infusion, transient nausea or mild flushing. These typically resolve within hours.

More serious reactions, including allergic responses, are rare but require clinical monitoring. This is why IV iron at Body Brilliant is administered in clinic with senior nurses and a defined post-infusion observation period.

IV iron is not appropriate during the first trimester of pregnancy, in active infection, or where there is known iron sensitivity. We screen for these and other contraindications at consultation.
